Laura starts this horror, mystery thriller film crying in front of the mirror because her husband is considering divorce and has separated. Laura then takes Mia and Aiden to see Richard. Richard wants to talk to Laura when the kids arrive at their father’s house. Richard and Laura are alone when she sees Grace leaving the house. Richard says he wants to marry Grace and finalize the divorce when asked for their secret meeting.

Laura leaves sad. Laura drinks wine to cope, then shoots herself. Mia, Aiden, and Richard attend her funeral. After their mother’s sudden death, Mia asks Richard to leave her alone while Aiden stays with her. After six months, Richard asks Aiden and Mia if they want to spend Christmas in the mountains, but Aiden refuses when he learns Grace will join them for a week when their father returns to work.
Richard tells them he will marry Grace and wants to get to know them. Aiden fights with his father and leaves. Grace visits Richard, who tells her they must postpone their plans. After Richard leaves, his kids search his computer for Grace. Grace belongs to a Radical Christian Sect, and her father believed that only sinner souls are sent to earth and that the only way to get rid of sins is to die.
Grace survived to spread the sect’s message. When Richard arrives, the kids lie and say they are working on their school project because their computer is updating. Richard suggests kids try Grace because she’s a good cook and can make anything they want.

After a few days, the kids pack up and join their father in the car, showing they finally agreed. They pick up Grace from her house and arrive at their mountain house. Grace feeds Richard and the kids after putting Grady to bed. Grace becomes uncomfortable after seeing Mother Merry’s picture on the wall and starts bleeding from the nose. After that, Grace stares at the cross in her room, and Richard tells her it belongs to Laura and they can remove it if she wants.
The next day, she watches kids playing with their father and tries ice skating with them. Richard asks the kids to help Grace with ice-skating, but they take their mother’s hat and leave her. After that, Mia accidentally drops her doll into a fish hole, and Grace finds her while retrieving it. She falls into the cold water while helping Mia. Richard rescues and brings her home. After warming up, Richard tells her he won’t return to the city if she’s not feeling well.
Grace convinces him to go by saying it was her idea and she will handle everything. Before leaving, Richard shows her a gun and demonstrates its use. After telling the kids to be nice, Richard leaves. Grace talks to the kids after Richard leaves, but they don’t listen.
Mia plays with her fish while Grace decorates. Grace asks Mia what she wants for Christmas, and she says a puppy, but her father won’t let her. Grace says she didn’t get a gift either because her father was strict and gave Grady to herself.
Grace feels bad after Mia shows her the videos of their mother with them and Richard, so she leaves. Grace asks Aiden about dinner but gets no response and eats alone. She then notices Aiden watching her shower. Later that night, Grace dreams of walking around the house and opens her eyes to the floor. Grace helps Mia find her doll when she yells. Grace apologizes to Mia after finding the doll in Grady’s bed.
After taking her medications, Grace calls Richard and tells him everything is fine and that she’s having fun with the kids. Grace then suggests they talk more, but Aiden refuses. Grace gets mad because he can watch her shower but not talk to her. Grace is happy when Aiden gives her tea later that night. Mia acts sick and asks her brother for the gas heater.
Grace falls asleep watching the movie with the kids after Aiden brings the heater and questions its safety. Grace opens her eyes and finds herself in the middle of the ice. She falls into the water and her father drags her down, but it seems like a dream. Grace wakes up to no light, no phone, and frozen pipes. She wakes Aiden and discovers his phone is broken too. She finds the house empty, including the food. Grace thinks the kids scared her.
She returns to her room to find her medicine gone. She’s mad at the kids, but they say she did something because they let her walk around the house at night. Grace checks the kids’ room to make sure they did nothing. After lunch, Aiden tells Grace that he had a dream last night that the three of them were suffocating from the heater.
While in December, Grace noticed the dates had changed to January. Aiden denies knowing. Grace takes a shower and reads “Repent” in the mirror, which frightens her. Grace returns to her room and stares at the cross when Mia complains about noise.
Grace checks upstairs with Mia and finds the window open and many footprints. Grace closes the door and goes to her room, listening to many whispers. Grace leaves her room and finds Aiden’s body like her cult members.
Grace slaps Mia when Aiden wakes up. Grace asks Aiden to pack and says they’re going to the nearby town. Grace walks out despite the kids’ objections. She eventually finds a house and a man watching her. Grace cannot open the door.
Grace returns home and finds Aiden and Mia’s picture, indicating their death. Grace is sitting when Aiden brings the picture to her and asks about it. Grace says she doesn’t know. Aiden tells Grace they may be dead, but Grace says she is still hungry, afraid, and cold. Aiden says death can be like it—how can they know?
Grace recalls his father’s followers’ words while alone. Grace leaves the house, sick of the voices, and returns to find the kids repenting. She finds a newspaper reporting the trio’s death. Grace hits Aiden when he makes her repent. Aiden leaves, saying he can prove they’re dead.
Aiden hangs himself on the roof, and when Grace looks at him, he asks if she still believes him and says they are in purgatory. Grace agrees and repents far from home. The kids realize their mistake and tell Grace, but Grace returns with Grady’s corpse.
Mia rushes to see Grady dead and asks Grace to come inside, but she refuses. Aiden tells Mia they must convince her they are alive or she will die from the cold. Kids approach Grace with supplies. They admit they’ve been lying, but Grace says they’re all sinners and must repent before going to heaven.
She scares the kids, who leave to turn on the generator but fail. Later, the kids hear noises and find Grace hurting herself while repenting. Grace’s screams scared the kids all night. The next day, Richard leaves a voicemail asking his family to contact him immediately because he is approaching them. Mia, however, uses the downstairs bathroom. She cautiously ascends to the restroom. Grace grabs Mia and her doll when he tries to return to his brother.
Grace follows Mia, burns her doll, and asks her to give up her sins and idols. After that, Grace comforts Mia with her gun, but Richard arrives and distracts everyone. After seeing Grace with a gun, Richard realizes something is wrong. Grace points the gun at her head, telling Richard that she is already dead. Grace misses her shot. Grace shoots Richard. After seeing this, the kids panic and run to the car.
Grace approaches Richard’s corpse, wondering how he died. She leaves and finds the kids in the car. Next, Grace forces the kids to sing a divine song next to their father’s corpse. The movie ends when she writes “sin” on her and the child’s faces.
