They find a café in the south. After a long night on the road, resting and cleaning up at the café sounds great, so they stop their truck and enter the café, Mitch first. The attendant tells them the café is only for her customers. She greets Jack. He pays for fuel to enter her café, and she notices he is rough and asks if he had a rough night.
He cleans up in the bathroom and tries to remove his clothes by lifting them to his head, but a creature drags and hits him from behind. Mitch notices the café shakes from the bathroom wall hit, but the other guests aren’t concerned. Mitch spots the scarecrow again.
Jack exits the bathroom and tells Mitch to leave. She wishes them well as he passes the attendant. Jack sees the scarecrow as they rush into the truck. They drive away but return to that Café. Jack angrily drives away when the attendant asks if they had a bad night.
They drive in a circle and keep arriving at the café. Mitch quits. He says he no longer wants to run away, and home has nothing for him. Jack reminds Mitch that he told them to get home for Kathryn. Jack leaves Mitch after he refuses to leave.
Jack tries to hit the scarecrow with his car, but the creature pulls him out. It stabs him and enters a motel. Mitch follows it to die with his friend. He enters the motel and sees a girl. Kathryn, his daughter, keeps screaming for him to save her.
He searched each room but couldn’t find her. Screaming in regret, he dies. Sadie wakes up at 1 pm in the motel. Ava and Kim, her bandmates and friends, are the white tights. She says it’s late and they should keep going.
They start their journey in their work-equipped bus. They drive south without incident until their bus tire blows. Ava’s phone doesn’t know where they are. Kim calls the nearby house, about 4 hours away, and the person who answers says she can’t help her because they’re on a private road.
She tells her friend that the picker sounds like she is in the club, so they may not find anyone at the nearest house even if they walk that far. The girl drinks in resignation. Sadie sleeps on the bus, Ava and Kim on the floor. She calls her friend and goes to the oncoming car.
Two bizarre couples exit the car. Sadie asks if she can fix their box, but the couple says there is only one mechanic shop, Pete’s auto body, and they can’t get there in minutes. The couple suggests the team follow them to their house until they find a solution, but Sadie says they are used to camping and sleeping in the bus.
The couple also offer to get the girls a spare tire from a neighbor who has one the same size as their bus tire if they come, but Sadie refuses. She thanks them and tells them to leave. Kim shouts for the couple to wait as they drive away. She tells Sadie that they are weird and that staying in that empty desert is pointless.
The girls tell the wife they play in a band in the car. Sadie asks when they’ve lived on that island alone, and the husband says since the war. She asks about a bear trap in the car’s booth and is told it’s spoiled. Sadie reluctantly enters their house.
She invites them in. She tells the girls to rest until they entertain the Kensington family. She regrets losing Alex, a teammate. She doesn’t repeat what she said when Sadie asks again, and the other girls don’t hear her.
Sadie is uncomfortable in that house and tries to convince her friends, but they don’t believe her. They have dinner with the Kensingtons and meet their two adopted boys. The boys ask if the band was four. Vegetarian Sadie refuses burnt-roasted beef served to the girls.
After eating, Kim talks to her as she searches the house for an escape. She claims Sadie let Alex leave that night because she wanted sex with a man and killed Alex. Kim vomits black matter as Sadie denies it. Sadie calls 911 when Ava vomits. They give her a white drink to calm the girls, and she begs her friends to leave with her that night, but they refuse.
She discovers her friends are doing an initiation with the family that night. Her friends try to rescue her from the bear trap she found earlier. She struggles to the road to find a car.
She sees a car coming and signals to the driver. Lucas, the driver, hits Sadie while talking to his wife on the phone about her dress choice. He rushes to her, seeing her bleeding. He considers his options. He answers his phone after his wife calls.
911 tries to send help, but he can’t locate himself. The attendant calls his name and says it’s in his call record. Since he can’t find his location, they tell him to carry her into his car and get help. He drives with her as phone voices give him directions.
He visits a hospital because no one will help him. To his surprise, the hospital is empty. He’s lost and confused. When Sadie’s bone breaks in his hands, the dispatcher tells him to find an incubator and put it in her throat. She bites his hands after he obeys. A doctor tells him to leave his hands there and compress her lung. He accidentally suffocates her. He leaves after the voices laugh at him.
He is frustrated because the hospital is closed, but the same people call and ask him to explain what happened. He claims it’s not his fault and she was halfway. They tell him to drive and give him a place to find a dress. He asks the creatures at the back if he should worry, but they say no.
The dispatcher enters a bar after leaving the phone booth. AI, the attendant, argues with her about why she left the door open. Danny, armed, enters the bar seeking his sister, Jesse. Danny shoots Warren, a demon who attacks him.
AI promises to take Jesse to his location. Jesse tattoos a boss when he arrives. She hugs him but insists on staying. He kidnaps Jesse after AI says the same. Demons pursue them.
After driving, the road is empty. Jesse encourages Danny. He pulls over. She says she killed their parents and shouldn’t live, but the monsters saved her. Jesse flees when the demons attack Danny. Jem, a college-bound girl, sees her at the bar.
Jem visits her parents for their last weekend. A car watches them leave the bar for their vacation house. Her father, Daryl, hears sounds outside while preparing dinner. Then three masked men enter. Jem hides as masked men kidnap Daryl and his wife.
One man looks at Daryl when he asks what he did. He realizes his mistake but gets them. They kill his wife after one whispers what he did to her. Jem’s car horn distracts them from killing Daryl. They kill Daryl after Jem leaves. He dies seeing Kathryn’s picture.
Jack and Mitch remove their masks. Jem hits the last man with a wood before leaving. Mitch kills her for injuring them. The ground opens, revealing the scarecrow-like creature. Jack drives Mitch home after dragging the third masked man back.
The next day, Mitch checks Kathryn’s picture and notices the creature beside them. In the first scene, they drive into the café, ending the film.
