The adventure, fantasy film begins with Edgin and Holga taking a prisoner to his cell. Holga quickly knocks out the monstrous prisoner. Ed and Holga are working at the prison when Edgin tells her it will be their last day because his friend Jonathan will help them in the absolution council. Ed waits for Jonathan before the Absolution Council, but the storm forces him to tell his story.
Ed says he wasn’t always a thief but took an oath to join Harper’s Faction, a group that helped others for free. Ed’s wife helped him catch many robbers and the Thayan Red Wizard. Harper Ed made many enemies too soon.
Thayan red wizards killed his wife. Ed’s wife dies after telling him to save their daughter, Kira. Holga and Ed became brothers after pitying Kira. He also claims Holga was shunned for loving a non-tribal man.
After his wife died, Ed says they started stealing. They added Kira and told the council they never killed or stole from the rich. He tells the council that Simon, a sorcerer, and Forge, their inspiration, formed a team.
Until red wizard Sofina arrived, everything was fine. Ed, a harper, could help her steal from Konins Keep. Ed refuses to help her, but Forge convinces him that the treasure contains a reawakening tablet that can revive one person. Ed lies to his daughter and leaves with his group and Sofina, thinking of his wife.
Ed deceives his daughter about the tablet. After stealing the treasure from Konins Keep, Ed and his team try to get the tablet of reawakening, but the guards attack. Simon escapes with Forge while Sofina freezes time. Ed gives Forge the tablet before freezing.
Jonathan arrives while the court writes its decision, and the two escape. The jury says they weren’t escaping. Home, they wonder where Forge is. After that, Ed sees Forge’s picture at a bar and realizes he’s Neverwinter’s Lord, but they don’t know how. Next, they visit Forge at his fort and discuss the High Sun Games, which no one has won. When Forge arrives, Kira is furious at her father. Ed doubts Kira’s love for Forge. Forge apologizes and greets his friends.
Ed and Holga lie to Forge and Kira about being released for good behavior and ask Forge how he became Lord of Neverwinter. Forge says Sofina helped him with Kira. Ed and Holga are thrilled to learn they are still together, and when Ed demands the tablet of reawakening, Forge turns Kira against her dad and makes her leave, thinking her father has been lying to her and is here for the tablet. After Kira leaves, Ed and Holga realize Sofina and Forge plotted their arrest and sold them to her. Sofina traps them and orders Forge’s men to behead them while attacking.
Holga distracts soldiers by talking and grabbing a brick. Her brick defense annihilates the soldiers. Ed and Holga consider stealing Forge’s gold to weaken him before the High Sun Games to approach Kira. Ed forms a team by reuniting with Simon, a non-goad sorcerer who can help.
The duo watches Simon steal from his audience at his magic show. Ed and Holga make him lose control and get caught. Simon magically escapes and rejoins Ed’s team. Ed says they’ll need a shapeshifter to sneak into Forge’s fort.
Simon tells them about Doric, a girl with similar abilities who rejected him for his low self-esteem. Simon displays Ed Doric’s skills. Her owlbear form saves her friend. Simon, Ed, and Holga recall her rejection. Doric refuses to believe Ed that they are here to destroy Forge because humans abandoned her for being different. Ed promises to overthrow Forge, and Doric says her people tried to question him about his unfair rule but were turned into enemies. She joins them to avenge his people’s deaths and Forge’s burning houses.
Sazass advises Sofina to use Forge before getting rid of him. Forge tells her to prepare because his guests have arrived. Forge shows guests the High Sun Games preparations and treasure safe. When asked, Sofina says the safe’s Mordenkainen seal is nearly unbreakable. She senses a wild soul and recognizes Doric, now a fly, in the room.
Soldiers find Doric as a mouse, bird, and cat, but Sofina recognizes her. Doric escapes Sofina as a deer and rejoins Ed and his team. Simon says only the Helmet of Disjunction can break the Mordenkainen seal protecting the safe. Simon inspires Ed about the helmet, but they must first find it.
Holga can help them get the helmet in Evermoors because her tribe was in the dragon cult. Simon claims he can ask five token-based questions to any corpse.
Sofina recruits Dralus, another Thayan, to kill Ed and his team and the soldiers who failed to capture Doric. Ed and his team question many Cult of Dragons soldiers at Evermoor graveyard and discover that Xenk has the helmet. Ed refuses Xenk’s help after learning he’s Harper Faction. After considering his daughter, Holga convinces Ed to find Xenk.
Xenks helps a cat mother save her son from a giant fish in his town. Xenk denies talking to Holga without knowing her. After revealing their intentions about the red wizards and Forge, Xenk leads them to his place and tells Ed’s team about Sazass Tam. Sazass Tam wanted power, so he gathered everyone from the capital and cast a spell that turned parents against their children, making the red wizards immortal after consuming all the souls.
To save Neverwinter, Sazass joined Forge. Doric says the helmet of Disjunction will defeat Forge. Xenk promises Ed to give the Forge riches to the poor and hides the helmet in the underworld. He tells Ed how he escaped Sazass Tam’s spell at the underworld entrance. Dralus follows them underground.
After seeing the brain-like creatures that control intellectuals’ minds and bodies, Xenk stops Ed and his team from entering the underworld. After leaving, Xenk shows the creatures how to cross a bridge. Simon’s step breaks the bridge. Simon fears crossing Holga’s ex-stick husband’s. The stick’s portal lets them reach the helmet easily.
Xenk fights Dralus and his men after Ed gets the helmet. He easily defeats Dralus’s men and orders Ed and his team to escape the underworld before they revive. They flee a massive dragon. Dralus and his men die, trapping Ed and his friends in a cave. Dragons flood caves. Ed suggests Simon start a fire with his candle trick when the dragon opens its mouth.
Ed’s team escapes after Simon repeats. Since Xenk helped them, Ed gets emotional saying goodbye. Simon puts on the helmet and finds his great-grandfather, who asks why he is there. Simon is discarded for not responding.
He tells Ed he lacks helmet confidence. Simon and the team left except Ed. He cries, saying he has failed everyone and that his wife died because he was greedy for gold. He’ll sit down and figure out another Forge-defeating strategy instead of quitting. Simon, Doric, and Holga sit with Ed due to his words. They devise another strategy. They sneak into the fort by planting a portal on something to take into the treasure room.
Next day, they buy a mirror and make a portal. Doric puts it in a treasure room buggy and leaves as a fly. Treasure room mirror falls. Doric orders her friends to leave while she turns into a worm and enters the portal when Forge starts the High Sun Games. Ed, Simon, and Holga use a spell to distract the guards but are discovered and followed. Simon and Ed split while Holga fights the guards.
Holga kills all guards who find Simon. He punches his grandfather again, taking the helmet. The mantra disables guards and all enchantments. Simon and Holga find nothing in the vault. Doric crosses the portal and finds Forge moving gold. In the vault, a guard knocks Sofina down.
Ed apologizes in Kira’s room while investigating his teammates’ issues. Sofina and Forge kidnap him. Forge orders Sofina to kill him because he is a better father. Ed speaks and demands to play the games because they will die either way, and Sofina agrees.
Holga and others are furious at Ed for trapping them in games. As the games began, a tiger stalked the players. Doric rescues Holga. Holga then helps Doric remove her hand from jelly. Ed is saved by Holga. Ed and his team reach the cage, but his mind clicks and he tells everyone the tests will get worse until they die.
Doric leads her friends to the jelly-like substance, tells them to stay inside for two minutes, and promises to save them. Doric transforms into a snake to save them. Sofina has convinced Forge to organize the games and gather people to hand over Neverwinter to her boss, Sazass Tam.
Kira and Forge can leave. Ed and his friends find the treasure boat, and Forge and Kira accidentally arrive. Ed apologizes to Kira for lying and says he left to get the reawakening tablet to bring her mother back. When Kira believes in her father, Forge kidnaps her and orders Ed and his team off the boat. When Ed distracts Forge, Holga frees Kira with a potato. Treasured, they leave port.
When Sofina offers Neverwinter to Sazass Tam, Ed turns the ship around. Ed keeps his promise to Xenk by raining gold and riches on the arena. Ed orders his daughter to hide.
Sofina attacks for clearing the arena. She fights Ed’s team with a dragon statue. Ed’s team attacks her after she overwhelms them. Sofina freezes everyone because fighting together is hard. Kira wears a bracelet in Sofina’s hands and loses her powers, telling Ed she’s mad. Ed says they distracted her so Kira could wear the bracelet in her wrist to disable her powers. Doric murders her.
Ed and Kira return to Holga worried. After Simon tells everyone they can do nothing, Holga dies hugging Kira and saying Ed is a good man. Ed uses the reawakening tablet to save Kira after Holga dies. Ed recites the mantra and revives Holga with the tablet, who hugs them. Later that night, Ed and his team witness Neverwinter’s beautiful celebrations and are rewarded when the real Lord of Neverwinter awakens. After his pardon is denied, Forge escapes with Jonathan but is caught, ending the film.
