Freman, a tribe girl, begins the film by recounting Harkonnen’s oppression of Arrakis, a vital desert. Harkonnen spice-ruled Freman for 80 years. After long suffering, the Emperor ordered Harkonnens to leave Freman, alarming Freman about their next oppressors. Paul awakens from his storyteller dream. Paul’s mother orders voice-command Bene Gesserit for breakfast. Paul’s mother Jessica tells him his father wants to dress ceremoniously for the event.

In a Freman documentary, Paul learns the spice is infinitely healthy. The universe’s most valuable spice was Harkonnens’ interstellar space. On Dune, Freman and Shai-Hulud giant worms attack spice harvesters, making spice farming nearly impossible. King Atreides, Paul’s father, greets the Herald of Peace and Universe House representatives. Herald of Peace announces Emperor wants House of Atreides to steward Arrakis.
Paul watches Duke Atreides sign. Paul then invites Duncan, one of House Atreides’ best soldiers, to Arrakis. After Duncan rejects him, Paul tells the Freman about his dreams of Duncan dying because he couldn’t help him. Duncan listens but rejects his mission application. Paul tells his father he has trained for Arrakis with Duncan.
Duke needs him for politics because Harrakonen won’t let them rule Arrakis peacefully. Duke says they rule the air, sea, and now dunes, but Paul believes he is meant for this. Duke says he wanted to be a pilot and is Atreides’ future. After that, Gurney, Atreides’ most loyal soldier, warns Paul in his room about Harkonnens’ brutality and urges him to abandon Arrakis alone.
Rabban meets his King and uncle, Baron, at the House of Harkonnens, furious that the Emperor gave Arrakis to Atreides. Baron tells Rabban to wait. Jessica wakes and takes Paul to Dr. Yueh. Reverend Mother is waiting, says Dr. Yueh.
Jessica leaves, telling him to obey Reverend Mother. Reverend Mother bows. She tells Paul to put his hand in a box and remove it will kill him. After learning, Reverend Mother ends his dreams. Despite his powers, his mother saved him. Paul’s ideal girl.
Reverend Mother criticizes Jessica for focusing on a man when she wanted a girl. Jessica leaves Reverend Mother crying, saying Paul could have died if he wasn’t the One. Paul asks what Reverend Mother meant by Paul being the One. Jessica reveals that she secretly runs Imperial Kingdom politics and has been waiting for a man who can see the future and past to connect them. She says his dreams may be premonitions and that most of their rivals think he is the One.
Paul meets Thufir Hawat, his father’s friend, in Arrakis. Thufir greets his King and declares victory over Arrakis while soldiers clear the rough areas. Fremen call Paul Lisan al Gaib while walking to his thopter. In the thopter, Jessica tells Paul that the Freman have hoped for Lisan al-Gaib for centuries, but Paul doesn’t believe her. Thufir explains the worms and Freeman at their hotel.
Duke and Gunrey wonder why the dunes and worksite are silent. Heat forces them indoors. Jessica’s shadeout. Shadeout calls her Lisan al Gaib’s mother and gives her Shai-tooth Hulud’s knife. Freman’s pattern documentaries keep Paul worm-free. Paul smashes a fly-shaped hunter seeker.
Thufir resigns, but Duke orders him to find the spies. Thufir and his men find Harkonnen dead and report that he spied on them for days. Reverend Mother tells Baron the Emperor sent Sardaukar soldiers to help. She says he can kill Duke, but his wife and son are safe, and Baron promises not to hurt Jessica and Paul. After Reverend Mother leaves, Baron tells his man his desert will kill them, implying he will too.
Duke learns that Harkonnens’ machines take time to make at a conference. Duke announces he will visit every harvesting farm to check progress, and Thufir shows them the farms and Dr. Kynes, who has spent over 20 years. Everyone welcomes Duncan. Duncan tells his King about Freman, the best fighters, and Sietches. Duncan introduces Freman’s arrogant leader Stilgar.
Duke convinces him to protect Arrakis and get the spice, while Freman can own their Sietches and visit them when duty calls. Duke’s words make Stilgar stay. Duke’s group sees a Shai-Hulud approaching a harvester. Duke orders a carryall to lift the Harvester, but its arm breaks.
Duke thopter rescues 21 Harvester workers. Duke orders Paul to lead the crew to the thopters, but spice causes visuals again and Shai-Hulud leaves. Grey rescues.
After they land safely, Duke gets angry at Paul for not being careful and talks to Kynes about being set up to be killed by the Emperor, but she denies helping him, saying she has seen many men like him come and go. Dr. Yueh examines Paul and tells Jessica spice is psychoactive and may be the cause. After Dr. Yueh leaves, Paul tells his mother he saw his death with his open eyes and shocks Jessica by revealing she is pregnant.
Jessica meets her husband, who worries about his son and says Paul was fine before Reverend Mother. Duke trusts Jessica but wants her to protect their son. Duke awakens when a stranger kills security guards at night. Duke investigates a wall light outside, but Dr. Yueh tranquilizes him. Gunrey sees the Harkonnen army using heavy weapons when he emerges.
Sardaukars kill all Atreids, including Gurney, after Gurney’s counterattack. Dr. Yueh apologizes to his King for marrying Baron. Dr. Yueh will assist Paul. Dr. Yueh puts poison under Duke’s teeth and tells him that if he gets close to Baron, he can kill him by crushing and poisoning the air, but he’ll die when he crushes the poison. Duncan kills three Sardaukars simultaneously.
Paul’s room is empty. Duncan attacks Harkonnens, steals a Thopter, and escapes the city’s destruction. Paul wakes up on a thopter with his mother and Harkonnens discussing feeding them to the worms. Despite his mother’s approval, Paul cannot control a Bene Gesserit Harkonnen. Paul kills both Harkonnens and lands safely. Landing destroys Atreids.
Duke Leto’s wife’s freedom prompts Baron to kill Dr. Yueh. Baron poisons men and returns to Duke dead. Duncan tells Kynes Emperor’s betrayal, but she can’t hear or speak. Campers Jessica and Paul discover Duke Leto’s death and ring. Paul fears his father’s and his own war after seeing spice in their camp. Jessica’s fault. Duncan rescues them in his thopter after Paul recovers and they leave camp.
Duncan tells them about Sardaukars’ battalions, and Paul thinks Emperor is with Harkonnens; Jessica tries to talk to Kynes, who’s helping them. She hides. Kynes sends her men to an old ecological testing station. She protects them from the storm, but Paul asks her to testify about their betrayal. Kynes reminds him he is underground. Paul tells Freman that he has dreamt about her and can change her fate. Sardaukars kill guards.
Duncan sacrifices himself. Paul, Jessica, and Kynes escape, but Kynes gets separated. Kynes fights Sardaukars on a Shai-Hulud while Paul and Jessica leave the ecological station with the thopter. As Sardaukar approaches Kynes, Shai-Hulud engulfs them. Two follow Paul and Jessica into the stormy Sardaukar thopter. Rabban claims they pushed Paul and Jessica into a storm, killing them.
Storm-tossed Paul crashes the thopter. Run up the rock, mother. They continue in stillsuits after reaching the rock. Paul helps his mother avoid the Shai-Hulud by following Duncan’s procompass. They escape Shai-Huluds climbing a rock.
Paul stops his mother after visions. Stilgar attacks Paul. Stilgar informs After seeing him, nobody believes Paul is Lisan al Gaib. Stilgar saves Paul but doubts Jessica, saying the boy can learn quickly while Jessica is too old. Paul beats and shoots Stilgar while Jessica holds a knife to his neck. Paul’s dreamgirl China arrives.
Stilgar apologizes. While approaching Sietch, Jamis challenges Jessica for leadership. Paul challenges Jessica’s champion. Paul imagines his death and Jamis’s moves before the competition. Chani says Jamis is a strong fighter who won’t hurt him. She tells him to die honorably with Paul’s dream knife.
Amtal kills Jamis after Paul defeats him every time. After awakening Kawistaz Haderach, Paul kills Jamis. Stilgar’s men greet Paul. Paul says he saw his future in the desert and will come with them if they keep them because his father came for Freman’s strength, not spice or riches. Stilgar and his men take Freman to Sietch to ride Shai-Hulud, the deadly desert worm. China tells them it’s only the beginning and the movie ends with them admiring the man.
